Course Overview
This practical course develops safe, efficient operation of three core civil construction machines—excavator, skid steer loader and roller. It’s suitable for new entrants and experienced operators needing nationally recognised units (RIIMPO320F, RIIMPO318F, RIIMPO317F). Training focuses on planning, risk control, correct use of attachments, productive techniques and site communication to lift productivity and reduce incidents.
What You’ll Learn:
-
Plan and prepare works: read job docs, identify services, apply SWMS and site controls
-
Conduct pre-start/close-down checks and report faults
-
Operate each machine safely: manoeuvring, visibility, ground conditions, exclusion zones
-
Use attachments correctly (buckets, forks, brooms, etc.) and manage loads/materials
-
Excavator: trenching, battering/benching, stockpiling, backfilling, basic lifting (as permitted)
-
Skid Steer: loading/hauling, levelling/back-dragging, operating on slopes, confined spaces
-
Roller: select settings, compaction patterns, overlaps/edges, surface checks
-
Environmental controls: dust, noise, runoff and spill response
-
Communicate effectively with spotters and other workers; traffic/pedestrian interfaces
-
Complete required paperwork and housekeeping
-
Note: Content is customised to your workplace procedures and equipment when delivered onsite.
Key Topics Covered:
-
Machine systems & controls (ROPS/FOPS, stability, attachments, quick-hitch safety)
-
Ground assessment, no-go zones and working near services (BYDA)
-
Hazard identification, risk assessment and control implementation
-
Production techniques to improve quality and cycle times
-
Routine care: refuelling, greasing, cleaning and maintenance records
-
Documentation: pre-starts, defect reports, site permits and handover
Course Structure:
Blended theory and hands-on training with competency-based assessment.
-
Experienced pathway (1–2 days): targeted gap training and assessment
-
Beginner/limited experience (2–3 days): coaching, practice, then assessment
Delivery available at Rouse Hill or onsite with your plant.
Who Should Attend: Operators, labourers, leading hands/supervisors and civil crews working for councils, utilities, contractors and plant hire companies—whether upskilling or seeking formal competency.
Attire: Full PPE – Long-sleeve shirt, long trousers, steel-cap boots, high-visibility vest/shirt, hard hat, gloves, and eye/ear protection. Sun protection recommended for outdoor sessions.
Duration & example schedules
Actual timing depends on experience, class size and site factors. Typical plans:
Experienced operators (1–2 days)
Day 1 – Induction, theory refresh, site brief, pre‑starts; practical assessment scenarios on each nominated machine.
Day 2 (if required) – Gap training and reassessment or additional machines.
Beginners/limited experience (2–3 days)
Day 1 – Safety, planning, controls/terminology, demonstrations, supervised practice.
Day 2 – Consolidation, attachments, production tasks, troubleshooting; commence assessment.
Day 3 (if required) – Extra practice and final assessment.
Entry requirements
Training enrolment minimum: 16+ (with guardian consent if under 18) for off-road/site training; 18+ if any public-road movements are involved.
You will need:
- Construction White Card
- Recent experience evidence for the experienced pathway (e.g., employer letter or logbook)
- Unique Student Identifier (USI)
- 100 points ID (e.g. Passport & drivers licence 0R Birth Certificate & drivers licence -check web for combinations OR check online for other options). One must be a photo ID.
-
LLN: Basic English literacy/numeracy sufficient for safety instructions and paperwork
-
Fitness/PPE: Physically able to operate plant; bring long‑sleeve hi‑vis, long pants, steel cap boots, gloves and sun protection; hard hat and eye/ear protection as required
Machines & onsite delivery
We can deliver at our Rouse Hill facility or onsite. For onsite training, you’ll need:
-
Suitable machines in safe working order (excavator, skid steer, roller) with required attachments
-
A safe work area large enough for training/assessment tasks and exclusion zones
-
Access to any site‑specific PPE/inductions and communication equipment
-
Where lifting with excavator is included, appropriate lifting gear and procedures
If you don’t have equipment available, we can discuss hire options.
Onsite training – site requirements (checklist)
1) Machines & attachments
-
Excavator, skid steer and/or roller in safe working order with seat belts, ROPS/FOPS (where applicable), functioning safety devices and current service log.
-
Required attachments available and fit for purpose (e.g., excavator buckets — GP/trench/batter; skid steer bucket/forks/broom if needed; roller type — smooth or padfoot with working vibration/spray where fitted). Quick-hitches must be compliant and safety pins used.
-
Fuelled and greased; spill kit available at refuelling point. Keys accessible for start-up/shut-down checks.
2) Work area
-
Clear, level training space with adequate room for manoeuvring, stockpiles, loading, reversing and exclusion zones around each machine.
-
Defined practical task areas (e.g., trenching/battering pad for excavator; loading/levelling area for skid steer; compactable material pad for roller).
-
Safe access/egress for vehicles and pedestrians; suitable lighting for the duration of training.
3) Materials & utilities
-
Sufficient material for tasks (e.g., compactable road base for roller; soil/sand/gravel for excavator & skid steer practice). Quantities depend on class size—talk to us and we’ll confirm.
-
Water source for dust suppression/roller spray (hose or water cart) where required.
-
Waste/spoil management plan (stockpile location or skip/bin).
4) Services & hazards
-
Overhead & underground services identified and marked (e.g., BYDA/“Dial Before You Dig” checks completed and documentation available). Comply with local No‑Go Zone requirements for electrical assets.
-
Controls in place for traffic interfaces, pedestrians and other site activities (barriers, spotters, signage, TGS if near live traffic).
-
Known hazards isolated/controlled (edges, soft ground, trenches, pinch points, overhead obstructions).
5) People & inductions
-
Site induction completed for our trainer and all participants; any permits/SWMS signed as per your procedures.
-
A designated site contact/supervisor available during the session.
-
Spotter available when required by your procedures or risk assessment.
6) Safety equipment & amenities
-
PPE: long sleeves, long pants, steel cap boots, gloves, eye/ear protection; hard hats as required.
-
First aid kit and emergency response plan/muster point.
-
Toilets, drinking water and shade/shelter (and a wet‑weather contingency if outdoors).
7) Documentation to have ready
-
Plant risk assessments, daily pre‑start checklists and maintenance/inspection records.
-
Any site‑specific SWMS/JSA, permits and traffic guidance scheme if applicable.
-
BYDA/service locating evidence (if earthworks are involved).
-
For experienced pathway participants: employer letter or logbook evidence of recent hours is recommended.
8) Environmental & neighbours
-
Dust, noise and runoff controls in place; consider timing restrictions for local neighbours.
9) Optional (nice to have)
-
Extra materials/attachments to contextualise tasks to your work.
-
Photos or a short video of the proposed area emailed ahead so we can confirm suitability.
Can’t meet one of these? We can host at our Rouse Hill facility or help you line up equipment/hire options.
