INDUSTRY SUPPORTED PRACTICAL TRAINING
Pipeline Training conducts practical trench support training using trench safety systems and equipment commonly used throughout the Australian civil construction industry.
Through the support of Legend Hire, participants may gain exposure to a variety of modern trench safety systems and excavation support equipment used across real infrastructure and utility projects throughout Australia.
This practical exposure helps bridge the gap between training and real-world site operations.
Equipment and Systems May Include
- Aluminium trench shields
- Steel trench boxes
- Slide rail shoring systems
- Vertishore systems
- Trench edge protection systems
- Ladder access systems
- Davit arm rescue systems
- Gas monitoring equipment
- Trench access platforms
- Portable trench stairs
- Lifting chains and lifting points
Why Trench Support Training Is Critical
Trenching and excavation remain among the highest-risk activities within the civil construction industry.
Ground collapse, unstable soil conditions, underground services, confined working areas and inadequate trench protection continue to contribute to serious injuries and fatalities across Australian worksites.
Under WHS legislation, trench support systems must be installed where there is a risk of ground collapse or instability.
Workers involved in excavation activities must understand:
- Soil behaviour and trench stability
- Selection of suitable trench support systems
- Safe installation and removal procedures
- Trench access and egress requirements
- Inspection requirements
- Emergency response procedures
- Confined space considerations
- Exclusion zones and plant interaction hazards
Pipeline Training focuses heavily on practical competency development to ensure workers are prepared for real site conditions — not just classroom theory.
What you will learn
This course includes:
- Planning trench support activities
- Identifying trench collapse hazards
- Understanding soil types and conditions
- Reading trench support documentation
- Installing trench support systems
- Working safely around underground services
- Conducting trench inspections
- Installing trench edge protection
- Safe entry and exit procedures
- Removing trench support systems
- Emergency response requirements
- Communication and teamwork onsite
Practical training focus
Unlike classroom-only delivery models, this course includes practical activities within real excavation environments.
Participants will be required to:
- Assist with trench support installation
- Enter and exit protected excavations safely
- Conduct inspections
- Identify hazards and unstable conditions
- Use trench access systems
- Work around excavation plant and equipment
- Demonstrate safe trench work procedures
Practical competency is heavily emphasised throughout the course.

- Hard hat
- Hi-vis clothing
- Steel cap boots
- Safety glasses
- Gloves
Additional PPE requirements may apply depending on the training environment.

On Site Delivery
Space or Location Requirements (for onsite delivery) The work area should be adequately isolated from any other operations for the duration of the assessment.
The location needs to be large enough to allow the safe movement of plant and shoring equipment and made up of materials that can be excavated to a depth to allow shoring equipment to be used.
On Site-Specific Requirements:
The basic trench shoring task needs to reflect realistic work requirements and civil construction projects. The dimensions, type and complexity of tasks needs to be consistent with jobs that a person found competent in this unit would be expected to work on.
Note: The customer is responsible for ensuring the facilities and resources required for training and assessment are available on site.
This includes:
- Job safety analyses (JSAs), and safe work method statements (SWMs)
- A trench minimum 1.5m in depth and the same dimensions as the aluminium or steel shoring box will need to be excavated prior to the day. The shoring box will also need to be installed, moved along or within the trench, and removed from the trench. If you require specific training installing other various trench support systems (i.e acroprops, vertishores) that equipment will also need to be provided.
- The excavator will need have sufficient SWL to lift the shoring box and have inspected and tagged shackle and four leg chains.
- A means of safe access and egress to the trench will need to be provided (i.e Secured ladder, series of steps excavated into trench). Excavation edge protection and hand rails will be required. A davit fall arrest system is not specifically required unless it has been identified as either a control measure or as part of a rescue plan.
- Operators must be competent.
